Olive Oil and Chestnuts in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy
5-night Tour to Lucca and the Garfagnana
4 – 9 November 2009
Together we will explore the olive oil of Lucca and the chestnuts of the Garfagnana in Tuscany, experiencing new flavours, acquiring new skills, eating in family restaurants and meeting the locals, the artisans and Slow Food enthusiasts along the way.

Itinerary
Wednesday 4 November
Arrival at Pisa Airport or Lucca train station and transfer to B&B. Tour of estate and welcome dinner.
Thursday 5 November
The Orsi’s estate is 100% organic and all olives are picked by hand. Learn when olives are ready to be picked, how it’s done and pick olives with the family. Visit a traditional olive press and the 19th-century aqueduct that still carries water to the public fountains in Lucca.
Friday 6 November
Take your olives to the modern olive press and watch them being turned into extra-virgin olive oil and take a bottle home. In the afternoon, a cooking lesson and a tutored tasting of newly pressed oils.
Saturday 7 November
From a small mediaeval hilltop village where we follow a woodland trail to Beppe’s metato (chestnut drying hut) and a herd of Cinta Senese belted pigs. We also visit a water mill where the chestnuts will be ground into flour. Our farewell dinner will be at a restaurant noted for its excellent fish dishes.
Sunday 8 November
At a chestnut festival you join the locals for a meal based on chestnuts, each course served at a different courtyard along the cobbled streets of a mediaeval village.
Monday 9 November
Transfer to Pisa Airport or Lucca train station

The Orsi family have sensitively converted the old olive drying rooms and press on their olive estate into a comfortable, modern B&B while retaining Tuscan farmhouse features.
